“This is as vital a time as any in recent memory to explore the complexity of war, and this piece does so by infusing an awareness of history with a consciousness that comes from living in the 21st Century,”
said Castellanos.

“We’re looking forward for the chance to inspire Austin audiences to ask the same questions and quest for the same revelations that led us to create this piece.”

Scratch & Burn, a 70-minute anti-war ritual influenced by hip-hop is a collaboration from award-winning actor, director and playwright Teo Castellanos, his multi-cultural, all-male company D-Projects, and break dance legend Ricardo “Speedy Legs” Fernandez.

Written by Castellanos and choreographed by Fernandez, Scratch & Burn explores war traditions and battle cries using modern hip-hop vernacular and movement, as well as incorporating early Zulu rituals, elements of Butoh, Maori war dances, Tibetan Buddhism and modern political war games.

The piece is a potent investigation of human nature and our incessant need to battle for supremacy and dominance . . . that begs the question - When is war not the answer?

D-Projects, founded by Castellanos in 2003, represents a cross section of conservatory and street trained artists who have joined forces to create provocative contemporary performance. Influenced by the collages of Romare Bearden, Juan Sanchez and the compositions of John Coltrane, D-Projects fuses ancient traditions with contemporary performance and b-boy choreography, confronting social issues and bringing world rituals to the stage.

Tickets for the show are $22 for adults, $15.50 for DU members, $15 for students and seniors and $10 for children under 12 (service charges not included). Group rates available.
