Stretch + Conditioning
Wake up, stretch and get ready to learn from the foundation up. We will incorporate the ABC’s of Breakin’ into our daily routine of stretches building flexibility strength and endurance. This class will help students understand the pedagogy of a contemporary folk dance.
Top Rock + Style
Rock is the soul of the dance. Through a basic understanding of Top Rock vocabulary and combinations dancers will begin to discover their own style and character. This is the beginning of the quest to find your individual voice in Breakin’.
Freezes + Power
Power is the most recognizable part of Breakin’: spins, flips and sustained balances. It requires the most physical training but it also requires an understanding of rhythm, anatomy and a good sense of internal and external timing. Students will begin to develop the strength to learn these dynamic moves.
Lunch
History + Folk Roots
Breakin’ is one style of Hip Hop dance. In this workshop we will learn about the origins and influences of this culture in the 1970’s. Breakin’ is a descendent of many influences: African, Latino, Caribbean, Asian and European. Breakin’ has become an international practice and has a global community of B-Boys and B-girls. We will view footage and look at historical articles from the ‘70’s, 80’s, ‘90’s and present.
Breakin’ Text + Foundation
Breakin’ is an intense physical practice. Proper technique is just as important as it is in any other dance form. This class will focus on weight distribution, body placement and the vocabulary that makes up the foundation of Breakin’. Students will focus on drops, footwork, basic spins, back rocks, glides, freezes and fundamental combinations.
Choreography + Repertoire
Breakin’ is a language; a dance language, with this language we can tell a story, explore an emotion or journey to places both familiar and foreign. We will delve into the creative process through oDT’s repertory and find variations on the same movement themes. Students will re-interpret the choreography to tell their own story.
Musicality
There is no dance with out music…whether it is the rhythm of our own soul or the hits of the jazz, funk, soul and hip hop era’s. This class will introduce students to a wide range of classic break beats, soul music and contemporary hip hop tracks that will inspire us to dance on the break…to break and go off…or just listen and cut loose.
Circle + Battle Tactics + Crew Routines
Breakin’ was created in a circle; the form has been innovated through a quest to win the battle by outdoing and outdancing the most notorious dancers. It is a rite of passage and a source of respect for anyone who chooses to enter the circle. This session will honor the circle and give space for everyone to enter the circle and begin to understand what it really takes to win in a battle and achieve the title B-boy or B-girl.
The camp will culminate with a performance with oLive Dance Theatre.
